Black Skimmer Fly By

Skimmers are a bird perfectly adapted to it’s environment. They live and fish in the tidal inlets, flying low in search of small schools of fish.

Their bottom feathers are white, the fish don’t see these fast movers coming. Dark top feathers protect them from predators above. The longer lower bill allows them to scoop fish on the fly. A perfect machine.

I saw this pair making a shore run so I just waited to see where the flight would take them. There were many inlets so they followed the water and breeze.

This pair stopped skimming right before they reached me. I did get a few shots though.

Capturing a Skimmer in flight, at the moment they make a catch is the shot we all try for. We don’t get very many, it’s all about perfect timing. But it’s still great to follow these speedsters.
