When Sam Colt died in 1862 Colt firearms was producing many of the guns and rifles for the civil war. The famous ‘Colt 45’ was just starting. Elizabeth Colt took over the company and she was really the driving force for the ‘gun that won the west’.

The Colt’s lost 3 children early in their marriage. Many of the beautiful stained glass windows have small references to each.

Elizabeth Colt lost her final child, an adult by now, in 1894. He had become a well known firearms designer and sailor. He drowned while piloting his ship off the Florida coast.
As another memorial Elizabeth Colt had a Parish house built in his honor along side the church. Again the building is a national historic site and if possible as grand as the church itself.

A special thanks to the staff of The Church Of The Good Shepherd for making this all possible.
