I was not getting any closer to a Hummingbird than these. I did have a long lens, 500mm, but I had it back almost halfway to be sure I could focus fast.

These were taken from the porch of the barn / office at Bent Of The River Audubon Center. Unfortunately part of the building had the traditional red paint.

To get this close and clear I was forced to use a feeder as the focal point. I shot at 1/2000 which is slow for these birds. However faster speed (1/4000) brings some grainy (noise) background even with this new equipment.


We did move away to another spot and EJ captured unbelievable photos of many resting in nearby branches. I caught some in flight and other interesting poses that will be posted later.
