American Kestrel

This is a smaller bird and easy to miss. It is a member of the Falcon family.

A little earlier I had noticed a bird chasing the bands of Plovers around the pond. I didn’t pay much attention since it was about the same size and there were numerous Egrets and Herons standing near by.

Several Crows chased a bird in a tree overhead and I quickly shot a few frames before they all took off at once. Crows and noise generally means they are harassing a raptor of some kind. In this case a pretty small one.

The branch between us takes away from the image. But it is the first Kestrel I’ve photographed. Added here since many people are not even aware of this small Falcon that lives nearby.

  1. The photos are very good, but I have some bad news for you, it’s not a kestrel. The good news is that it’s still a falcon, but a merlin rather than a kestrel. The banded tail says merlin, and this bird is also lacking the strong face pattern with two bold “mustache” stripes of a kestrel.
