New England Fall Is Starting

In Connecticut New England fall is just starting.  Only the hills have had any frost so the leaves are changing slowly. Considering the dry summer, record setting in places, the fact we have any leaves at all is a surprise.

The photos above were shot at Day Pond, a small Connecticut State Park. At this time of year, during the week, there are not many people there. Something I appreciate immensely.

The image above, a tobacco barn, is close to the Connecticut river. These barns have open slates to allow the wind to dry the hanging leaves.

Many people don’t know that the finest cigar wrapping tobacco is grown in the valleys around the Connecticut river. At one time boats went up and down the river gathering the crop to eventually ship it to Cuba.

The barns and tobacco fields are slowly disappearing. Fewer people smoke cigars, and more importantly the land itself is more valuable.

I know it’s tobacco but the barns and fields are much prettier than some new shopping mall or apartment buildings. It’s really a no win situation.
