Just north of Charleston, along the Ashley River, there are a number of restored southern plantations. Middleton Plantation is one of them.
Most plantations along the river were built in the mid 1700’s and produced rice, not cotton like other parts of the south.
It seems more people from this stretch of river were involved with the American Revolution than almost any other part of the country. Read the different documents around here and everyone in town signed the Declaration Of Independence!
The history here fascinates me so I try to visit all the local plantations and farms. The best part is each one backs up to the marshes and swamps on the low country.
