Along the edge of a marsh there is an area thick with old River Cane (Giant Cane). The smaller wading birds feel safe here so usually there is something to find.

I knew the plants were too thick for common reeds and grasses, a little research tells me there are 2 native canes in South Carolina. The River Cane, growing in marshes and river banks, and Switch Cane. Switch Cane will grow in most any wetlands.

These plants are actually a native Bamboo plant and were very common until over farming and grazing took most of the plants.
