My wife is in charge of capturing these small birds. To catch the shot it’s important to stand there with your camera focused and at the ready. They are very quick and stealthy.
Her 400mm Canon lens is perfect for that. Long reach, but not too heavy.

I rarely photograph birds head on, like the one above. This time the expression (do they even have one?) was just right.
Wonderful shots. I enjoyed taking them in the spring (they were a little more cooperative than their fly thru in the fall).
I admit to passing on them as often as not. Not enough patience. Of course I’m usually with my wife, who will take all the time needed. I just keep walking and looking for bigger (slower) prey 😀
