Roseate Spoonbill Feeding In The Shallows

Like the Flamingo a spoonbills color is derived from their diet. This one was a paler pink than others I have seen.

The spoon shape of the bill allows the bird to sift through the bottom mud to feed on crustaceans, aquatic insects, frogs, newts, and very small fish ignored by larger waders.

Unlike most spoonbills this bird allowed us to get close enough to take a large number of photographs while he fed close to shore.
