In the past I have called this the Lego bird. This bird is expanding their breeding range, which is good for us and the species. For a while they were on the endangered list.

A tall bird at about 4 1/2 feet and a wide 7 foot wing span. They are impressive in flight and can glide along pretty high.

We have been expecting them to move a little south as winter hits however there are no signs of that yet. The southern part of South Carolina is the northern edge of their range.

The photographs here were taken on the edge of a marsh with these birds high on an overhanging dead tree. The sky didn’t help these shots much.
