Common Snipe Or A Rock

This should have started as a trivia question. Who has ever seen this bird. It turns out they are all over North America. However, they hide, really good at it too.

They sit down and freeze if you come close. They look like a rock and move like one. I probably could have picked him up.

A little research and I find not many people have seen or photographed this bird. I know it was a first for us.

Bird ID Update: Based on feed back and information from people who know more than I this is probably a Woodcock, not a snipe.

  1. I love your photos. If I am not mistaken, the Old World snipes are Common Snipes, but the snipes in N. America are Wilson’s Snipes. They used to be considered one species until they were separated into two a number of years ago.

    1. Thank you very much. Please visit often, there are over 1,000 pages here. We update/photograph all the time.

I used the Stokes ‘Field Guide’ to ID the bird and Common Snipe was the name given. Thanks, I will look further. It can be impossible to ID these birds at times ! Always need input. Most of our experience is in the northeast USA woods and now we are based in coastal South Carolina. Very different. Snow to tropics 🙂
