H L Hunley

The H L Hunley is a submarine from the navy of the Confederate States during the US Civil War. While not the first submarine ever built it was the first to be successfully used in naval warfare.

However, success is a relative thing here. The ship sunk three times, losing all crew members. The last time it was lost at sea in 1864, not found until 1995, and finally raised in 2000.

While visiting an old Charleston cemetery we noticed a small group together off near the marsh. Later we found old state flags had been left at a large plot.

All of the H L Hunley crew members (3 different crews) as well as the inventory, H L Hunley, are buried here.

Retired US Navy submariners had also left a wreath.

At the end of the US Civil War sections of land, marsh really, were added to the Magnolia Cemetery outside Charleston. The resting place here is along side the marsh lands and like most of this cemetery will eventually be lost.
