Old Southern Cemetery In Color

These photographs were taken in the old section of Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina. This area, as well as the US civil war grounds, is a subject we have covered often. Each time we find something different.

Visiting here in mid summer will provide you with the best light and color. All of these photographs were shot in the winter.

Why? This is a southern marsh, mosquitoes and gnats are vicious here. There is no amount of bug spray to save you. I do stop by in summer but rarely stay long.

  1. I love that these actually do look as though they were taken in spring time and not winter. You’re right, though. In those sort of locations, you’re a walking buffet to the insects. Did you happen to take note some of the dates on the tombstones? I know you said it’s a Civil War area as well.

    1. There are many graves from 1863-1864. The South Carolina casualties from Gettysburg were moved here, a full SC regiment, and the 3 crews from the confederate submarine HL Hunley. Search this web site with key word ‘cemetery’ and you will find many other articles from here.
