It’s a good thing we have had lots of practice with the larger birds. The smaller herons are moving in now and they have very different speed.

This species of Night Heron is about 2 foot (61 cm) tall and stocky. They feed mostly at night but during breeding season they are out with everyone else. They tend to chase each other, all the time.

The trick to catching an in flight shot with these is to have enough open space to follow their flight as the zoom by. Focus on the first images is usually not good, I need to catch up with them.
Excellent in-flight shots. I’ve only ever seen them fishing or snoozing in a tree.
Usually that’s all we ever see too. They are coming to the rookeries here in flocks. I’m sure there won’t be many in flight with these speed demons though.
I love hearing and seeing about all the different species of birds you have in your part of the world.
This is a special place for swamp and marsh inhabitants. I’m sure there are many more articles to come. Thanks for visiting
great shots
