This bird is a constant presence in the marshes along the Ashley River. At first I had thought it was young and the feathers were still forming. No, not the case.
Now that I have been close and photographed him several times it’s clear this bird is aging. However, considering the environment that’s a good thing.
This means the heron is smart and a good hunter. Having experienced the mortality rate of young chicks I hope to see more of these older birds.
