Spanish Moss is an icon of the southern US. Not a moss at all, it is a plant that receives nutrients through the air. It is soft and almost weightless. And has many uses in the wild.
A nest being one of the most important. Here a Black-crowned Night Heron is searching a Juniper tree for the right amount.
A story is told that Spanish Moss caused the first automobile recall. The Moss is so plentiful that Model T Fords used bushels of it to stuff their seats.
Spanish Moss grows in swamps and woods, which also are home to many insects. Well, stuffing seats was a really bad idea. So the first recall was to replace the seats.
Probably a myth, but it makes a great story.
