Old Sign Catches Your Eye, Charleston Before The Chains Take Over

Another in the ‘Colorful Charleston’ series. The sign is great, but the pharmacy is gone. An antique store looks to be in it’s place.

Antique stores, art galleries, and clothing have taken over the downtown store fronts. That will pass soon too. Charleston is booming so I expect all the chains to move in. And of course there goes the charm and reason everyone comes to visit.

NYC Soho was like that. First it was a downtown section filled with warehouses, garment center supplies, and old offices. Next it was discovered, so then came the Soho loft and trendy art galleries appeared. Now…The Gap and Old Navy. And of course no reason to visit.

History repeats itself. Glad I came to Charleston before Corp. America.

    1. It hasn’t happened completely yet. Just the starting rumbles. The town of Charleston has to determine what it wants. Right now it appears to be more hotels and tourist than can be handled. But while this is debated Charleston is still a gem. New Orleans without the grit.

  1. Ted–I think Charleston is probably about to the Disneyland stage. I see little to indicate it will make a real effort to stop being a tourist draw.
