These photographs are of a pretty large Bull Alligator on the banks of a small island rookery. The trees directly above are filled with Little Blue Heron nests. Usually loud but right at this moment dead quiet.
The bull here was making himself known, with loud growls and roars. Alligators can roar, big ones like this you can feel the sound.
A frog will fill his throat with air, make a large balloon shape and croak. In the image above that is what this Alligator is doing. After all both are reptiles.
Only difference is this one is 11 feet ( 3 1/2 m) and weighs 1000 pounds (454 kg).
A roar like this is loud, and we were maybe 50 feet away (15 m). I have heard it before, at night it’s positively prehistoric, but not this close.
It’s mating time, I think he was out looking.
