This is the biggest Woodpecker we have in the US. They reach 18 inches (46 cm), large for a bird that chops holes in trees. And when they do you can hear it from a distance.
For the longest time this was a bird I could never photograph. This one was in my back yard, times have changed. However, they are still hard and even behind my house I rarely even try.
This one was beating up the Pine trees so I went and grabbed a camera. Right up until a few minutes before typing this I never noticed the young bird behind the leaves.
That explains why she did not run away when I walked under the tree. Too busy giving wood working lessons.
