It’s not very often you get to photograph the hunt from start to finish. A Barred Owl is even more difficult. However, timing is everything.

Being in a swamp the catch was hard to shoot. I did get the bird hitting the water at the base of a Cypress Tree.


At first I had no idea what the prey was. Being dark it wasn’t clear. But in a moment I did see the prize.


Of course, this is a southern Owl. So a Craw Daddy is perfect.
The bird flew up to a close Cypress to finish the meal.

The Owl was very aware of me and would glance my way but nothing was going to stop the meal.

The only thing that went wrong was I missed focus when the Owl dropped from his perch to the water. About 4 shots were soft. I did get a perfect focus bird butt. I chose to leave that out here.
