This young Great Egret was at an age where he should be out flying and learning to hunt. An adult was refusing to feed the juvenile, a first step in getting them to fly.
Young Egrets are very aggressive and can physically force themselves on the parents for food.
Adults will stand for this until they finally refuse to bring any food at all. Like Little Blue Herons they lure the young by tempting with food, then quickly leaving. At some point the juvenile follows.
