Alfred Galliard Pinkney, 1862

This headstone, the flags and his name struck me because of the history of his families.

First,  Alfred Galliard Pinkney was 20 when he was killed, June 27 1862, in Gaines Mill Virginia. He was the flag bearer for the First South Carolina regiment in the US Civil war.

The Pinkneys were granted land in the 1600’s by the King of England. A Pinkney signed the US Constitution, fought in every war, were plantation owners, 7 were state governors.

The Galliards were French / Swiss, and again have been here since the 1600’s. They have been  land owners, many generations of doctors, and again active in the US service.
