This is an old headstone from one of the cemeteries in the Charleston ‘old town’ section.

I was always surprised at just how similar the styles of design were in Charleston, New England, and many of the other places we have photographed.
I never thought headstone carving could be an industry. But it was. For almost 200 hundred years they were all carved, then shipped, from New England quarries. In the 1860’s that stopped and it’s clearly a different look from then on.
