Calhoun held every major office in the US with the exception of President. He is also only one of two people who resigned the office of Vice President. He was a defender of slavery and the secession of the south from the USA.  Everything about the man is a contradiction.

Matthew Brady, the famous civil war and Lincoln photographer took one of his most well known ‘tin types’ of Calhoun. Downright scary looking individual !
