Black-crowned Night Heron, Like A Statue

A popular little guy for a few minutes. This Night Heron sat on the side of a water trunk (gate to control water flow) in a large marsh. Typically a shy bird, not this one.

Notice the green coloring near the eye, this is a Heron and Egret trait during breeding season.

Just off to the side here, in the open water, is a small clump of trees and reeds. This is a rookery where the Night Herons nest. Not a great spot since this also has one of the largest Alligator populations of…well anywhere.
