This is one of several ponds that make up what is thought to be the oldest landscaped garden in the US. Middleton Plantation Gardens.
The design around the main plantation grounds was based on the classic style used around Vaux-le-Vicomte and the Palace of Versailles in France. At one time there were over 100,000 azalea plants.
In the mid 1700’s Charleston was the most wealthy city in the 13 colonies. The rice fields were miles in size. The 2 most sought after commodities were Sea Isle Cotton (extinct) and Carolina Rice.
It looks pretty grand!
A little formal for me but a nice change of pace.
