I first noticed this bird when his head popped up from under the water. The bird was covered in weeds and thrashing his beak around. I was sure he had caught something but no idea what.

It obviously wasn’t a little minnow to flip up and swallow when he saw over to the wooden platform. Oh yeah, he also pushed a Blue-winged Teal out of the way.

The trick now was two fold, first get the fish off his beak (they spear with their sharp bill), and at the same time flip him in the air for a head first grab.

This is not easy with larger catfish so it took more than a few tries. It’s not his first time so eventually all the moving parts came together.
