Anhinga Sitting Pretty

A pretty female Anhinga came down right in front of me. She sat on this stump and gave me time for plenty of shots.

Anhinga feed primarily on fish they catch underwater. However like most predators out there whatever they can swallow is food.

During breeding season these birds have vivid blue surrounding their eyes. The females cinnamon neck feathers are much brighter too.

Anhinga will nest in the same rookery as Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets. All 3 compete for space and food. The Anhinga are the smallest of the 3, but like all predators they can be less than pleasant.
