Interesting Spot To Land On A Test Flight, Heron

Of course there’s a story to go with these shots.

I was standing waiting for an Egret shot when this juvenile Great Blue crash landed, almost directly on me. Neither of us expected to see the other.

I did the right thing and ignored him, not looking at him to avoid scaring a bad reaction from him. Funny, but he did the exact  same thing to me. And of course another photographer down the trail saw the whole thing, and captured it. Facebook had fun with me and the big Heron standing together and casually watching the Egrets.

I couldn’t take any shots at first because he was almost leaning on me. I had to slowly back up before getting anything.

I also had to turn the big lens/camera portrait style to get anything. That’s awkward with this gear.

The Heron was not all that upset being with people. He was from one of the nests that we have a clear view of. He has obviously seen humans since birth…and assumes we all have one big eye (camera).

He walked around a little bit, pretty much just curious, and finally climbed out on a low hanging limb.

After considering his options he flew off like an old pro, right back to his nest and excited sibling. I did a few good shots of that too, but still to be published.
