These photographs captured one of the last feedings of these juveniles. They had reached almost the same size as the adult. I’m sure she felt it was time to take a break.

A few days after these were taken I returned to find an empty nest. The large juvenile had been taking short flights so I’m sure they ‘found’ their wings.

I don’t know the numbers, but I think a large number of the Great Blue Heron chicks survived this year. I’m certain the percentage was better than last year. We did have less nesting pairs this year so the net gain to the population may have been about the same.
I’ve enjoyed watching their development but I guess it was time to strike out on their own. Great series!
With luck the small rookery near by will get some nesting. It’s time for the Little Blue Herons and Night Herons to be hatching. It’s empty now, last year it was full, but there might be some late arrivals.
