There is an added bonus out in the marshes now, Black Skimmers. They move between the shore and marshlands for feeding. Catching them is a great challenge.
They are lightning fast and fly low over the water. Typically you have little notice of when they will pass you. Also they don’t hunt in a straight line, they follow the small schools of fish.
The fish they catch are really small (click above and look hard) so it is constant motion for them.
And of course they are black, with black eyes. The hardest combination to photograph.
All that said, when Skimmers are spotted all the wildlife photographers fine tune their gear and go out to try their luck.
Beautiful shots, Ted! What a magnificent bird!
Thanks Pete. This bird is designed perfectly for shallow water fishing. They can fly like a big swallow and grab fish at high speed with no slow down.
