The other day we walked along an old rice field and marshes on a dirt road. It’s a pretty easy walk, near our home, and can be done on a moments notice. I used a ‘walking around’ lens so I could capture the scenery around us, and the wildlife we encountered.
Part of this dirt road is shaded by a tree canopy and tall brush. That’s a big plus this time of year.
A river runs along here also and if there is any kind of breeze this is the place for an afternoon. Somewhere here you will stumble on Herons and other wading birds.
Young Great Blue Herons hide with the trees here and think they are invisible when we walk by. These are the birds that were raised in a rookery about a mile in from here. This is the next stop in their trip out to the world. Food is here, and they can find it on their own.
On a summer afternoon this is the end of the walk. Make the turn and it’s open marsh, hot sun, at least a mile until another trail.
