Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, was an American television show that featured wildlife and nature. It was originally produced from 1963 until 1988. It was a staple of every man, woman, or child for generations. Things were eaten, monsters were real, all cool stuff.
So… I walked out onto the porch the other morning and immediately heard “Close the door, it’s like x#! Wild Kingdom out here”. A phrase that is part of the American language now.
For my piece a big lizard was chasing a little lizard around the porch, new born bunnies now lived in a little hole in the backyard (the dog is fascinated) and were out for a walk, and a moth the size of an airliner was out back.
It occured to me that some of my life now is like Wild Kingdom. I decided to just grab a few photographs from the last few weeks and make them an article rather than a single subject as I usually do.
If you have ever seen the TV show this photograph above fits it perfect. A wild river, white birds feeding, and of course something in the water looking to eat everything else. In this case 2 somethings, Alligators.
On the way to the open water that day, just off the dirt road to our left was a herd of Boar. I think 11 all told. Wild Boar, now that is something I think I actually may have seen on that show!
No mention of ‘Wild Kingdom’ is complete without a villian of some kind, at least thats what the kids thought. This big guy was a stone throw away from all the bird activity in the first image.
About 15 minutes down the road from the scene of the first photographs is a huge marshland. Here a Wood Stork flew by over a large pond. These are the birds I write about as having wings so large you hear them coming.
Of course the famous Roseate Spoonbill needs to be included here. This shot was from the same pond as the Wood Stork. The flocks don’t usually mix together, but if food is around they ignore each other.
Not all the animals are super sized out here. Though each is special in some way. Above a Black Skimmer slips over the surface catching small minnows at a high speed.
This is my own small version of ‘Wild Kingdom’. Every day is an adventure, and I want to be right in the middle of it.
Note: 8/5/2018. I did my best to correct the million typos I found last night. Much of what I type is on an IPad. I know that’s a bad idea, auto correct is my enemy, but it’s easy. Heck…I’m fixing the IPad errors on an IPad.
I like easy.
I loved the show as a kid. Let’s keep the adventures coming 😊
I remember the Crocodiles grabbing some critter and dragging it in the water. Stuck with me as a kid… explains a lot with me and the gators 😂😂😂😂😂
Fabulous post Ted! Amazing to live in a place where every day is an adventure!! 🙂
That’s what prompter the article. It is
And what an amazing ‘Wild Kingdom’ you have there, Ted! Fantastic photos! Thank you for sharing!
A few days ago it was chaos, in a good way. Boars, gators, big pink birds, the whole lot. It occured to me to use that analogy after Ellens comments.
