They were flying low overhead and in small circles, obviously something was on the trail with us.

A little wind confirmed it.

Right over the trail a Vulture had taken up watch also.

Off in the water there was a fish kill. A large number of dead fish. A kill like that is not a healthy sign, but anything could have caused it. Man made or natural. Around here the Vulture is critical to keeping the lands clean.
