Alligator Series, Declaring Territory To Photographers (Profiling)

Alligator profiling is when ‘an adult displays themselves by throwing their head upwards and back, while raising their tail upwards. Arching their back while growling’.

Alligators profile to attract a mate, declare a territory as theirs, or call to others.

Above, an Alligator basically letting us know he is here, like it wasn’t obvious enough. In between showing off he was chewing on something so he wasn’t all that worked up.

The image below was taken when he first started to take an interest in us. At first he watched, and then slid into the small canal to casually swim over. He was in no rush so I just started to shoot him heading over.

It became (below) interesting when he didn’t stop as they usually do. He finally did, but was close enough to let us know we were to pay attention.

In one of the gallery images you can see his tail raised. I was so busy shooting the jaw and teeth display I missed catching the tail action.

For a few moments he was all ‘fussy’ and bobbing his head around.

Finally he was done, sank back down, and gave us a dirty look before swimming away.

  1. Beautiful!! I love the one’s with his head popping out of the water, mouth open! A true living fossil!

    1. It’s a love / hate thing with Alligators. The warning he gave in that shot is not to be ignored, but we are around them (today in the middle of 30+) enough to know what they will and will not do. Fascinating prehistoric animals.

If you like Alligator shots this is ‘gator time’ here so many more in the next weeks.

    2. Awesome! I can’t wait! It must be so thrilling to be out there with them all the time, learning their mannerisms.

    3. That’s great! It’s important to connect with nature and all the creatures we share it with! I’ve always been a country bumpkin so the city is a foreign place for me.
