Walking through these old cemeteries you can see the shifting fortunes of families, and the region.

Head stones with intricate carvings before the Civil war (1861 – 1865) were created in the New England states. The quarries and masons were more plentiful.

After the war many markers were simple, few carvings. The area around Charleston SC was no longer a hub of wealth, at least for a long period.

A large section of this cemetery is simple flat stones, broken carvings and military markers.

Charleston had always been home to wealthy families and more important, politicians. Soon members of congress and government officials were back in Magnolia with style.

That is part of it’s beauty. Old, history, and some Victorian flair.
