When I first found this rookery I was not aware of the lengths some Herons go for that ‘perfect’ stick. I actually found out the hard way.
At the time it never occurred to me they would be up in the branches pulling things apart. I was walking on a trail, all alone, and suddenly things were falling all around me.

Above is pretty much what I saw that morning. Now I’m better prepared, and yes I do look up now. They may be huge, but they are birds.

There is still some mystery about what makes one stick better than another but apparently there is a difference. This Heron is obviously focused on a special one.

He did eventually get it and flew off with the prize.
So interesting!
There are miles of ‘sticks’ to find and they always want the one they can’t have LOL. A lot like people that way.
