Brown Water Snake

Brown Water Snake

Very appropriate, a water snake heading into the (swamp) water.

I found these are also called the ‘false moccasin’, and they do look like the Water Moccasin (Cotton Mouth).

They are non-toxic and are found throughout the southern US.

A simple ID is the head is not triangular, so not a venomous snake.

    1. You can tell by the brown “mask” over the eye, the vertical slit pupil and the flat head. Other, nonvenomous snakes can flatten their heads so they look big and triangular shaped, but they don’t have the other field marks evident in this snake.
