This is one of the last adult Great Blue Herons that are still making food runs to a nest. The others have grown enough to at least fly off into the shade of the woods. Heat here has been brutal and some of the younger chicks may not make it much longer.

The Heron above was in the tree line and dropped down to return to a nest. This is an adult. None of the birds want to sit out in the sun, but in a rookery the nests are mostly wide open.

These were quick shots since he came down from above me. This time of year the full leaves can hide them overhead.
For the second year in a row the rookery season will be ending at least a month shorter than it should. The small wading birds are nesting elsewhere. We will need to look at our notes soon to see where we shot last June / July.
