Cypress Swamp In The Rain

Cypress Swamp In The Rain

It’s hard to make a wet and dull swamp photogenic. Even harder to get a decent shot when the lens gets wet and you are bobbing around in a flat bottom row boat.

However, that said here are a few soggy images.

The trees here are either Bald Cypress or Tupelo Cypress. Tupelo being the tree songs and gourmet honey are made of.

The swamp is owned by Berkeley County, South Carolina. The public can visit (a small fee) and boat around the water here, walk trails, or eat at the wooden tables. This place was very popular until a huge flood, and back to back hurricanes destroyed it. After three years the county opened it again.

There is a place to hold events so the cost of running this can be somewhat offset. Also, this is a perfect outdoor movie set for making films. Multiple well known movies were filmed here that needed a (semi) safe swamp to walk through. I’m sure the county makes a few dollars from this too.

I wonder if they told the Hollywood director this swamp connects to others, that connect to a few rivers. Maybe they charge extra for the Alligators.

Mel Gibson filmed ‘The Patriot’ here. When wading through the swamp, holding torches up high and being famous, did he wonder what he was about to bump into?

We may visit again, in dry weather.

    1. Thank you. I usually can’t get any tall shots of a cypress, too many trees in the way, but they do grow high. There are some Cypress that are hundreds of years old. In the back swamps they have found a few over 1,000 years old.
