While photographing the rookery at Bird Key it was a gamble on where to focus and shoot. Look one place, off to the side something else was happening.
These types of images are what I had been hoping to catch. I know Pelicans like to fly low on the surface, and I was in a small boat at that level. What I didn’t expect was how quickly, and close, a Pelican would come by.

If you could hold steady on the side of the boat, and focus, then if the shots were bad it was your own fault. The Pelicans did their part.

Many times the Pelicans wings were a hairs length away from the oceans surface.

For a nature photographer it doesn’t get any better than this.

Fabulous photos of the pelicans Ted!
Thank you. I will be picking through images for a while.
Thousands of Pelicans and I took plenty of shots since it’s a place you can only get to by boat, and at the right tide.
What fun! I love to be out on a boat!
It was great, and they only way to get close.
Stunning flight series, very nice!
Thanks. I knew if I just kept shooting, with thousands of Pelicans, something had to work 😂
