When The ‘Five And Dime’ Was King

When The ‘Five And Dime’ Was King

From a long gone era… what we called the ‘5 & 10’ in NYC.

This Kress building sits on one of Charlestons main streets and is now a clothing chain. But who knew, an Art Deco 5 & 10 building.

Growing up in NYC we had a Kresge (Kress) and Woolworth directly across Steinway street from each other. Neither was even close to ornate. Heck ‘Cheap John’s’ (John’s Bargain Store) was on the other corner. This was not 5th avenue.

Both had the old revolving doors. Woolworths the black and white checker board street tiles just along the outside entrance.

Kresge, well that had a creaky wooden floor, and smelled like an old 1800’s tenement. Which it was.

When I saw this building memories flooded back, and then ‘how could this be a 5 & 10’.
