The first time I ever saw a wild Pelican it was from a balcony like these. Somewhere on a vacation outside the US. It seemed exotic, and strange that a Pelican was hovering right in front of me.
The wild birds and a big structure like this still seems to be complete opposites. A contradiction.
Above is actually two flocks. Each going in a different direction but meeting in front of the hotel balconies.
Pelican flight fascinates me. Big and heavy they know how to make the wind and thermals do the work for them.
Here was a good example. Flocks went up and down the beach, always using this exact spot for their path. Why? They caught the winds off the water hitting against the building. A slight breeze, but enough to lift their wings with no effort.
Taken at Folly Beach, Charleston, South Carolina.
Oh yeah, below there must have been a thousand people from out of town, soaking up the sun. I don’t think any looked up to watch the Pelican Parade.
