I had never heard of them until about a year ago. Nice looking, strange habits…especially for a duck.

First, there is no quacking. They whistle. Not much of a tune but it’s definitely a whistle.

From what I have seen they like to stand out in the open. Adults, young, doesn’t matter. This is the land of big Hawks, Eagles, and of course Alligators. So why not let everyone know where you are.

They will sleep in trees though, so that must be why they are not extinct.
