Both of these photographs were taken in the same general area, same day.

Above is a juvenile Yellow-crowned. Most likely from this year. The brown stripes make for excellent camouflage. They will lose all the brown coloration by next year and become grey with a white and black head.

Next is the adult Black-crowned Night Heron. As a juvenile they look similar to the first photo. You can see the dramatic change.
Beautiful bird Ted. Your first sentence below the juvenile says “Yellow-crowned” whereas the other mentions are all “black-crowned”.
Thanks š , I labeled the first photo wrong. The juvenile is a Yellow-crowned, the adult the Black-crowned (almost) cousin. A sub-species of Heron.
