This is one of my favorite subjects.
Long, lean, and elegant in flight.

They can be surprisingly fast, especially so if close and trying to fit them into your viewfinder.

This time of year it’s difficult to get these photographs. Early spring is best when they are out looking for nesting sites.
Great Blue Heron, Charleston, South Carolina.
Gorgeous.
They have such Elegance in flight.

That is the perfect description. For several months each year we dedicate a lot of time with these birds. There is a rookery in a swamp not far from our home.
We have photographed them literally from cracking the egg through their first flight. Great Blues are special.
There is a category on this site called ‘ a tale of two herons ‘. Rather long, several articles, but it documents the sucessful fight for survival of 2 young Herons against an Egret attack. Very visual, photographed over hours, but the chicks held their own until an adult returned to protect them.
If you have an interest in Herons it is a snap shot into a day in their lives. You can search for it.
Thanks again, Ted
Many thanks Ted.
Marvelous flight shots!
Thanks, my favorite to photograph.
