A Long Line Of History On These Stones

This particular head stone, and several others in the same plot caught my attention. All the names, maiden names, and middle names reference the founding families of the USA, Charleston, and even the short lived Confederate States.

The last names of Rutledge, Pinckney, and Lowndes were prominent politicians, plantation owners, and merchants in Charleston. Charles Pinckney signed the US Constitution, John and Edward Rutledge signed the US Declaration of Independence, and Rawlins Lowndes was a first plantation builder from St. Kits by the kings land grants.

Go forward and the founding families now fought a civil war (Civil War flag bottom of the image) to break up the country they created. This generation is buried here.

You never know what you will find when out on a walk.
