I think this was the first ‘catch of the day’ I shot. A male Anhinga with a decent size fish. The birds have different ways of dealing with a fish depending on their size (just my observations).
The Anhinga fish by using their sharp bill to spear prey under water. They are very effective.
Here the catch is a little too large to just throw in the air and catch it head first. That is the small fish method.
This one needs to be held high, stop moving, and then eaten head first.

This time the Anhinga ultimately went back under the water with his catch.
Both Great Blue Herons and Egrets were near and a few looked to be getting ready for the steal…and it happened multiple times during the day.
