The scales and coloring of these guys change over time. Young ones have distinct shading and colors to help them hide in grasses.
The full adults become a drab brown/grey but again it helps them hide. This time to catch prey. Alligators rely on ‘opportunity’ to hunt. If it comes close, grab it.
Above you can see two adults. One is dry having been out of the water for hours. The other just climbed out minutes before the photograph. The darker ‘wet’ color helps an Alligator blend in when in water.
