The Gullah are the descendants of enslaved Africans from various tribes who lived in the Lowcountry regions of the US states of Georgia and South Carolina, in the area of both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. The Gullah people and their language are also called Geechie.

Geechie is a language based on both English and African words, in a African sentence structure. As explained to me by a person of Gullah descent a common language was needed among the enslaved people to communicate with each other. They were from many different tribes and regions (most in the Lowcountry were from West Africa) so only a few words were common. If you listen to the language you can follow the flow and understand a bit using the English words as reference.
